MSC 95G Blue Takes 2011 DII State Championship Title
Mobile Soccer Club’s 95G Blue soccer team, headed by Coach Jason Providence, returned to Mobile victorious from Decatur, AL on November 13 after winning the Girls U17 DII Alabama State Championship. After finishing second in league play with a 5-0-2 record, the team secured a spot in the State Cup Final Four after playing the weekend of November 5-6.
The MSC team came out strong during the first round weekend of State Cup, beating EAFC Tornado 95 Select by a score of 7-0 on November 5. They stumbled on Sunday, November 6, however, losing their first and only game of the season, to ASCS 95 Blaze of Alabaster by a score of 2-4.
In the semi-final game on November 12, in Decatur, MSC faced the number one seed, NAU Madison Extreme, and came out on top by a score of 5-1. In the game Summer Stout led the offense by scoring a hat trick. Rebekah Diring and Jessica Watts also each added a goal.
The following day, Sunday, November 13, the Championship game was set as a rematch of the previous weekend’s game between MSC and ASCS 95 Blaze. For several girls on the MSC team, this was the third year that they made it to the Alabama State Championship game. This year the team won the gold with a score of 4-0. Allison Kam scored the first goal, putting in a beautiful header off a ball that was punched out by the keeper from a corner kick. Summer Stout scored on a penalty kick after Jessica Watts was fouled in the box by the Blaze keeper. Rebekah Diring added two goals to ensure the title.
When asked about the team and the game, Coach Providence says, “I am so proud of my girls and am proud to beat Blaze who had beat us the previous week. The girls are successful because of their togetherness, and how they played for each other. I also like how they never give up.” Coach continued, “I believe there was a great all around effort and I am especially happy with the defense, which was very instrumental as they had only given up nine goals this year. I am also happy that the team had a strong attack.”
The team finished the season 8-1-2 and outscored their opponents 41-9.
The team is now headed to Atlanta on December 3-4 to play in Norcross Nike Cup college showcase, where they are grouped with a club team from Brazil. The next big event for the MSC U17 girls will be in Greensboro, NC, in June 2012 to represent Alabama in the USYS Region III 2012 Presidents Cup.
